Baseball Bisons Split Doubleheader with No. 11 St. Edward's

SEARCY – After being shutout 3-0 in the opener, Harding baseball responded with a 5-1 victory over 11th-ranked St. Edward's on Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader at Jerry Moore Field. The victory was Dr. Patrick McGaha's 290th victory as head coach at Harding, making him the winningest baseball coach in program history.
 
Harding (1-1) is now 5-1 in its last six games against nationally-ranked teams.
 
Game One Key Innings (St. Edward's 3, Harding 0)
  • Harding starter Andrew Fiddler and St. Edward's starter Collin Sherrod held both of the opposing lineups scoreless through seven innings.
  • In the eighth, St. Edward's scored two off Harding reliever Reed Roberts. With two outs and runners at second and third, junior Gable Whitacre bounced a single up the middle scoring both runners.
  • Hilltopper Romeo Cortina led off the ninth with a triple and scored on Wesley Harris' single to right to complete the scoring.
 
Game One Key Statistics
  • Harding starter Andrew Fiddler allowed only four hits and two walks and struck out four in his first start of the season.
  • Preseason All-American Collin Sherrod earned the win for St. Edward's. He gave up only two hits, a single to Zac Steward and a double to Noah Chandler, walked three and struck out five.
  • Juan Cortina pitched the ninth for St. Edward's and earned the save.
  • Wesley Harris and Dylan Watts had two hits each for the Hilltoppers.
 
Game Two Key Innings (Harding 5, St. Edward's 1)
  • Harding jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Stewart singled with one out and scored two batters later on Davis Richardson's single through the right side. Noah Chandler also had a single in the inning and scored on Alan Copeland's sacrifice fly.
  • The Bisons added a single run in the second on John Chapman's RBI triple. In the fourth Harding added an unearned run. Following a two-base error, Zach Beasley scored on Jesse Cox's RBI single to right.
  • With two outs in the sixth, Harrison Hunter reached on a bunt single and scored when Hilltopper reliever Andrew Boes uncorked three consecutive wild pitches.
  • St. Edward's only run came in the fourth on a Harris RBI double.
 
Game Two Key Statistics
  • Hunter Payne made his first career start for the Bisons and picked up the win. He went 5.0 innings and allowed only five hits and one earned run. Stewart pitched a scoreless sixth, and Joshua Spears closed out the game with a scoreless seventh.
  • Hilltopper starter Bryce Davis (0-1) suffered the loss. He allowed three earned runs in two innings
  • Harding had nine hits in game two and was led by Richardson, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Beasley scored two of Harding's five runs.
