Harding Posts Two Shutouts in Sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle

SEARCY – Harding starting pitchers Andrew Fiddler and Hunter Payne combined to pitch 14 shutout innings and strike out 14 Oklahoma Panhandle batters in a non-conference doubleheader sweep Friday at Jerry Moore Field. The Bisons won 10-0 in the opener and 5-0 in game two. The series concludes with a single game Saturday at noon.

Harding improved to 3-5 on the season, while Oklahoma Panhandle fell to 1-6.

The last time Harding had consecutive shutouts in a doubleheader was on Jan. 31, 2015. The Bisons shutout Augustana 22-0 and 1-0.

Game One Key Innings (Harding 10, Okla. Panhandle 0)
  • Harding's first two hitters reached base and came around to score in the first inning to give the Bisons a 2-0 lead. Harrison Hunter walked to lead off the inning and scored on Noah Chandler's ground out, and Zac Stewart singled and scored on a Davis Richardson sacrifice fly.
  • Stewart reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch to give the Bisons a 3-0 lead in the second.
  • Harding broke the game open with five runs on five hits and two Panhandle errors in the fourth. Alan Copeland's two-run triple to center was the big hit in the inning. Hunter and Chandler both had RBIs in the inning.
  • The Bisons tacked on the final two runs in the sixth on Chris Taylor's two-run double.
  • Game one ended after seven innings due to the NCAA's 10-run rule.
Game One Key Stats
  • Andrew Fiddler allowed only three hits and no walks and struck out four to improve to 1-1 on the season. All three of the hits he allowed were singles. His ERA for the season dropped to 2.13.
  • Fiddler threw only 63 pitches in the game, 48 for strikes.
  • Alan Copeland was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. It was his first multi-hit and multi-RBI game of the season.
  • Harrison Hunter was also 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in a run. Freshman Blake Coward was 2-for-3 and scored a run in his second multi-hit game of the season.
  • Harding had a season-high 11 hits, including doubles from Hunter and Taylor and a triple from Copeland.
  • Oklahoma Panhandle starter Samuel Beattie fell to 0-2 after allowing seven hits and eight runs (six earned) in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked two.
  • Panhandle committed four errors that led to two unearned runs.
Game Two Key Innings (Harding 5, Okla. Panhandle 0)
  • Harding opened with a two-run first inning in game two also. Hunter was hit by a pitch and scored on a wild pitch, and Noah Chandler drove in Stewart with a double.
  • The Bisons tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Jaxon Mohr walked and later scored on an error, and Hunter scored Taylor from third on a sacrifice bunt.
  • Hunter picked up his second RBI of the game on a ground out that scored Jaxon Mohr from third in the sixth inning.
Game Two Key Stats
  • Hunter Payne struck out a career-high 10 batters and allowed only four hits. He threw 75 pitches, 59 of them for strikes. Payne improved to 2-1 with a 1.08 ERA.
  • Hunter's two RBI game was his first multi-RBI game of the season.
  • Jaxon Mohr had a hit and a walk and scored twice.
  • Harding left eight runners on, including the bases loaded in the sixth.
  • Stewart was 1-for-2 with a run scored and has a team-best four-game hitting streak.


  • Joseph Cerda was 2-for-3 for Oklahoma Panhandle.
  • Panhandle starter Adrian Lopez fell to 0-2, allowing four hits and four runs (three earned) in 3 1/3 innings.
