Harding Remains Third in GAC with 89-83 Victory over Southern Arkansas

SEARCY – Harding made only five 3-pointers but connected on a season-high 24 free throws and defeated Southern Arkansas 89-83 on Thursday in Great American Conference action at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

With the victory, Harding remained in third place in the GAC. The Bisons are 15-9 overall and 14-5 in conference games. East Central and Ouachita Baptist both won Thursday and remained one game ahead of Harding and tied for first at 15-4.

With 2:15 left in the game, Southern Arkansas' Deon Andrews made a layup after a steal by Jaron Davis and cut Harding's lead to 81-79. Following two Blake McNair free throws that put Harding back up by four, Davis made a layup at the 1:06 mark to pull the Muleriders back within two.

Sophomore guard Reggie Anthony hit a driving layup on the left side with 36 seconds remaining and made two free throws on the next trip to seal the victory.

Harding led by as many as 12 points in the first half, and a McNair layup at the buzzer gave the Bisons a 40-37 halftime lead.

The game was tied three times early in the second half, the last coming on a McNair jumper that made it 51-51 with 14:33 left. Junior Will Francis connected on two 3-pointers in the next minute, and Harding never trailed again.

TEAM STATS
Harding shot 51 percent from the field, the eighth time this season that the Bisons shot 50 percent or better.

Harding's five 3-pointers were a season low, but the Bisons held Southern Arkansas to only four 3-pointers.

Harding made a season-high 24 free throws, topping its previous high of 22 made in the Bisons' first game this season at Southern Arkansas.

Southern Arkansas outscored Harding 52-38 in the paint.

INDIVIDUAL STATS
Anthony led Harding with 19 points, his ninth straight game with 11 or more points.

Francis scored 17 points, his sixth straight game with 10 or more points, and had a team-high and season-high nine rebounds.

McNair and Jacob Gibson both scored 18 points. Gibson made three 3-pointers and has 203 3-pointers in his career. He is three behind Aaron Farley's school record.

Alvin Braddock led Southern Arkansas with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
