Delta State Scores Two in the Bottom of the Ninth to Defeat Harding Baseball

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Delta State scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Harding 5-4 and sweep the three-game series. The Statesmen (3-0) won 11-5 and 2-1 on Saturday.

Harding (1-5) led 4-3 entering the bottom of the ninth. With one out Will Robertson doubled to left, and Harding brought in closer Zac Stewart to replace Joshua Spears. The Statesmen followed Robertson's double with three consecutive hits. Jacob Swiney singled to left to put runners at the corners. Ethan Gill's infield single scored Robertson to tie the game and sent Swiney to second. Ben Pickard doubled to left to score Swiney with the game-winning run.

Key Innings
  • Harding took a 4-1 lead in the top of the seventh. Chris Taylor led off the inning with a walk and moved around to third on Blake Coward's single that was bobbled by Delta State left fielder Will Robertson.
  • Delta State answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to trim Harding's lead to 4-3. Gill's single to center with two outs off reliever Reed Roberts scored both runs.
  • The Bisons plated three runs in the fifth and led 3-1 at that point. Zach Beasley had an RBI single, and Zac Stewart drove in two runs with a triple.
  • Delta State opened the scoring with Robertson's solo home run in the first.
Key Stats
  • Harding starter Andrew Ralston allowed only one earned run over six innings and lowered his ERA for the season to 2.25.
  • Jake Brumfield started for Delta State and allowed three earned runs over five innings. He had nine strikeouts and no walks.
  • Stewart, Zach Beasley and Coward had two hits each and accounted for six of Harding's seven hits. Stewart had a double and a triple, Harding's only extra-base hits.
  • Robertson, Gill and Pickard had three hits each for the Statesmen, who had 14 hits as a team.
  • Delta State reliever Bryant Johnston earned the win, and Stewart (0-1) took the loss.
