Harding Baseball Scores First, Wins Again at Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – When the Harding baseball team scores in the first inning, it wins. At least that is how it has worked out for the Bisons this season. Seven times Harding has scored in the first inning, and the team has won all seven.

The first-inning phenomenon struck again Tuesday. Harding used a Henderson State error in the first to score a run and went on to win 5-2 in a non-conference matchup at Clyde Berry Field.

Harding improved to 8-8 overall with the victory, and Henderson State fell to 8-9.

KEY INNINGS
  • With two outs in the first inning, Henderson State rightfielder Jake Gaul misplayed Alan Copeland's fly ball and Copeland ended up on third base. He scored on Noah Chandler's double, his fourth of the season and his seventh RBI.
  • Harding opened the second inning with three consecutive hits to take a 2-0 lead. Davis Richardson led off the inning with a bunt single and went to third on Tyler Mohr's second double of the season. Richardson scored on Jesse Cox's bunt single.
  • Henderson State cut the Harding lead to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Hunter Mayall led off the inning with a walk and scored on Taderious Hawkins' RBI single.
  • Harding tacked on another unearned run in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Cox walked to lead off the inning, went to second on Harrison Hunter's sacrifice and scored when Zac Stewart singled and Cox scored on a throwing error by Henderson State third baseman Jordan Taylor.
  • Another Henderson State error, this one on shortstop Frank Chiolino, led to two more unearned Harding runs in the sixth. Jaxon Mohr and Richardson both singled with one out. Following a strikeout and a passed ball, Mohr scored from third and Richardson from second on Chiolino's error on Cox's ground ball.
  • Henderson State's final run came in the bottom of the ninth
