Eight Not Enough as Harding Baseball Falls to Ouachita

SEARCY – Ouachita Baptist rightfielder Drew Feuerbacher threw out the potential game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth and the Tigers defeated Harding 9-8 on Tuesday in non-conference action at Jerry Moore Field.

Harding (11-13) trailed 9-7 entering the bottom of the ninth. Harrison Hunter walked to lead off the inning against Tiger reliever Jorden Lawrence. Zach Beasley pinch hit and reached on a fielder's choice and was replaced by pinch runner Jack Thomas.

Freshman Ben Brauss reached on a throwing error by Ouachita second baseman Aaron Studdard and Thomas moved over to third. On a 1-2 pitch, Harding leadoff hitter Zac Stewart lined a single to right, scoring Thomas, but Feuerbacher's throw cut down Brauss at the plate. Stewart attempted to move up to second on the throw but was thrown out to end the game.

Harding returns to action Friday at 3 p.m. for the first of a three-game Great American Conference series in Searcy against Southeastern Oklahoma. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday at noon.

Harding held a 4-0 lead after three innings, but Ouachita took the lead with five runs in the fourth. The Bisons answered with three in the fifth on a three-run triple by Grant Guest.

Ouachita (7-14) tied the game at 7-7 with two in the sixth and took the lead for good with two in the seventh.

The teams combined to use 15 pitchers in the game. Ouachita employed nine, and Harding used six.

Guest was 3-for-4 with a run and three RBIs to lead the Bisons. Stewart had two hits to push his team-leading hitting streak to nine games. Ouachita had 12 hits with five different players recording two hits each.

Bo Sutton (1-0) pitched for the first time this season for the Tigers and earned the win. He went 1 1/3 innings and struck out one. Alan Copeland (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) in 1 1/3 innings.
