Stewart Leads Harding Baseball to Comeback Victory

JACKSON, Tenn. – Harding used a four-run top of the ninth inning to come from behind and defeat Union 16-14 on a day when the wind was blowing out at 17 mph, and both teams took full advantage.

Harding snapped a six-game skid and improved to 12-16 overall with its highest-scoring output of the season. Union, a member of the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference, fell to 14-10.

Trailing 14-12 entering the ninth inning, the Bisons used five hits, including a two-run single from Grant Guest that pulled Harding even. The Bisons added insurance runs on Davis Richardson's RBI double and another on Noah Chandler's run-scoring single.

Harding had six extra-base hits, including a school-record tying three triples and a home run from Zac Stewart to lead off the game.

Stewart and Chandler both had four hits for Harding. Stewart was a double short of hitting for the cycle and raised his batting average to .400 for the season with his 16 multi-hit game. He scored a career-high five runs and drove in three.

It was Chandler's third career four-hit game.

Harding led 8-2 after scoring five runs in the top of the third, but Union answered with eight runs in the bottom of the inning. Two Union runs in the bottom of the seventh broke a tie and gave the Bulldogs a 13-11 lead.

Harding used five pitchers in the game, and Stewart, on a day he seemed to do a little bit of everything, pitched the final two innings for the win. He improved to 1-2, did not allow a hit and struck out three.

Andrew Wilson (0-2), the second Union reliever, suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs in 2 2/3 innings.
