SEARCY – Harding baseball earned a doubleheader split with Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday as the teams concluded a three-game Great American Conference series. Oklahoma Baptist won the opener 8-4, and Harding won game two 4-2. Oklahoma Baptist won Friday's game 6-1.
Harding is now 9-10 overall and 4-5 in GAC games. Oklahoma Baptist is 13-5 overall and 5-4 in the GAC.
The Bisons scored single runs in four different innings, and starting pitcher Hunter Payne was again outstanding in leading Harding to a game-two victory.
Grant Guest, who had hits in both games of the doubleheader, drove in a run in the first to put Harding ahead. Jaxon Mohr singled and came around to score on a wild pitch to give Harding a 2-0 lead in the third.
A two-run home run by Oklahoma Baptist's Felipe Gonzalez tied the game in the top of the fifth. Harding freshman Ben Brauss had a pinch-hit single to score Jaxon Mohr with the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the inning.
Blake Coward walked with the bases loaded in the sixth to complete Harding's scoring. The Bisons drew nine walks in the game and had five hits.
Payne (4-1) pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed five hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts. Zac Stewart pitched the final 1 1/3 innings and earned his first save.
Harding battled back from a 4-0 deficit in game one tie the game with three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. In the seventh, Harding used Guest's RBI single combined with a walk, a hit batter, a passed ball, a balk, an error and a wild pitch to score the three runs. Harding tied it in the eighth on Harrison Hunter's RBI single.
Seven of Oklahoma Baptist's first eight batters reached in the top of the ninth, and the first four of those scored to allow Oklahoma Baptist to pull away.
Reliever Joshua Spears (0-1) received the loss, allowing four earned runs. Andrew Ralston, Harding's starter, struck out six in six innings and yielded four earned runs. Jackson Ward pitched two perfect innings of relief and struck out three.
Guest and Noah Chandler both had two hits for the Bisons.
