Stewart Pounds Four Hits as Baseball Bisons Swept in Doubleheader at Southwestern Oklahoma

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Southwestern Oklahoma hit four home runs in game one and had six extra-base hits in game two of a doubleheader sweep of Harding on Saturday in Great American Conference action. The Bulldogs won 10-3 and 9-3 after the Bisons won Friday's opener 6-2.

Harding fell to 21-25 overall and 13-17 in conference games. The Bisons remain in seventh place in the GAC standings with only its home series against Arkansas Tech next weekend remaining. The top eight teams reach the GAC Tournament, with the top four hosting a three-game first-round series.

Southwestern Oklahoma (29-13, 19-8) remains one game behind Arkansas-Monticello for the top spot in the conference.
Harding plays again Tuesday at home in a non-conference game against Union (Tenn.).

KEY INNINGS, GAME ONE (Southwestern Oklahoma 10, Harding 3)
  • Southwestern hit three home runs in the first inning to take a 5-0 lead. Korbin Polston and Greg Bruno both hit two-run homers, and Jacob Spring hit a solo home run.
  • Southwestern added two runs in the fourth to push the lead to 7-0.
  • Harding broke through with its first run in the sixth. Zach Beasley singled to lead off the inning and scored on Noah Chandler's RBI double.
  • Polston's second home run, another two-run homer, accounted for two of Southwestern's three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Bulldogs led 10-1 at that point.
  • Harding scored two in the bottom of the eighth. Zac Stewart drove in a run with an infield single, and Noah Chandler reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Bulldog error.
KEY STATISTICS
  • Six of Southwestern's 13 hits went for extra bases. The Bulldogs' four home runs tied the most against the Bisons this season.
  • Stewart, Grant Guest and Beasley had two hits each for Harding.
  • Andrew Ralston (3-5) suffered the loss for Harding, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits over 3.0 innings. Matt Brashear pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
  • Junior right-hander Gunnar Cook (8-3) struck out 11 and allowed only one run over six innings for the win.
  • Harding left 14 runners on base, tied for its second-highest total this season.
KEY INNINGS, GAME TWO (Southwestern Oklahoma 9, Harding 3)
  • Southwestern scored in five of the six innings it hit, taking a 2-0 lead in the first on three hits.
  • The Bulldogs led 3-0 after two innings, but Harding scored two in the top of the third to cut the lead to one. Stewart had an RBI single, and Harrison Hunter doubled in a run.
  • Southwestern added three in the third on a three-run, bases loaded double from C.J. Faddis to make the score 6-2.
  • Polston extended the Bulldog lead to 7-2 with an RBI double in the fourth.
  • Harding's second run came in the sixth. Stewart doubled to lead off the inning and scored on Guest's double.
  • Polston added two more runs on his third home run of the doubleheader and fourth extra-base hit in the sixth to close out the scoring.
KEY STATISTICS
  • The top four hitters in the Southwestern lineup were 9-for-15 with five runs and six RBIs.
  • Stewart was 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead Harding. His double in the sixth was his team-leading 15th of the season. Harding's record is 22 by Chase Presley in 2011.
  • Hunter Payne (6-6) gave up six runs in 2 2/3 innings and took the loss.
  • Junior Devin Ring (5-3) was the winning pitcher, allowing three earned runs and striking out six in 5 2/3 innings.
