Banger Finishes Regional Tournament in Quagmire

ALLENDALE, Mich. – In the second round of the NCAA Division II Midwest/Central Regional on Monday, Harding sophomore Mason Banger played in near perfect conditions and shot 1-under 70, tied for the best round of the day at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University.

On Tuesday, Banger played his final round with it raining sideways, standing water in the fairways and wind gusts of more than 20 mph. He shot 11-over 82 and finished the regional tied for 51st of 103 golfers with a 17-over 230. He did end the tournament on a good note with a birdie on his final hole.

Almost every golfer struggled with Tuesday's conditions. No one shot par. Michael Schmitz of Winona State shot 1 over, and it allowed him to move up 46 places. Individual champion Talon Supak of Illinois-Springfield shot 6-over but held off Zach James of Southeastern Oklahoma by one stroke.

Banger, who qualified for the tournament as one of the top four individuals in the Central Region, is the second Harding player to reach the regional tournament in the last four years. Lucas Collins tied for 62nd at the Midwest/Central Regional in 2013 in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Tournament favorite, 10th-ranked Central Missouri, won the team title. Central Missouri shot 48-over 900 and won by one stroke over Southeastern Oklahoma of the Great American Conference.
