EL DORADO, Ark. — The No. 26-ranked Harding men's golf team handled the formidable challenges of Mystic Creek Golf Club better than any other program Monday, surging to a commanding 17-stroke lead after the first two rounds of the Arkansas Collegiate.
The Bisons posted a 36-hole total of 24-over 600, opening with a 13-over 301 before shaving two strokes off that mark with an 11-over 299 in the afternoon. Harding is the only team in the 15-school field with a total score under 40-over par.
Tournament host Southern Arkansas sits in second place at 41-over, while No. 32 Central Missouri is third at 50-over.
Harding junior Dennis Staykov sits atop the individual leaderboard as the only player in the field under par. Staykov carded a 2-under 70 in the morning—the lowest round of the day by any golfer—and followed it with a 1-over 73 to finish at 1-under 143.
Staykov's opening round was highlighted by a spectacular stretch on the back nine. On the 468-yard, par-4 15th, Staykov striped a 4-iron approach from 220 yards to within 10 feet and drained the birdie putt. He followed that on the par-3 16th by sticking a 5-iron from 218 yards to 8 feet, converting his second consecutive birdie to cement his place at the top of the leaderboard.
Staykov leads teammate Jose Arzu by seven strokes. Arzu, also a junior, recovered from an opening-round 78 to fire an even-par 72 in the second round, the best afternoon score of the day. Arzu is alone in second place at 6-over 150.
The scores reflected the extreme difficulty of the Mystic Creek layout. The par-72, 7,111-yard course yielded a scoring average of 81.50 across the first two rounds. Staykov's first round and Arzu's second round were the only two rounds of par or better on the day.
Senior Jose Manuel Peralta provides the Bisons with a third player in the individual top 10. Peralta shot a 3-over 75 in the morning and finished the day tied for ninth at 11-over 155.
Freshman William Pulley is tied for 13th at 12-over (78-78), and sophomore Austin Bibb made a significant second-round jump, carding a 4-over 76 to move into a tie for 22nd at 15-over. Junior Conner Geist, competing as an individual, is tied for 40th at 19-over.
Harding enters Tuesday's final round seeking its second team title of the spring season and first ever at the Arkansas Collegiate. The Bisons have finished in the top three in six of their eight events this year.
The final 18 holes will begin Tuesday at 8:10 a.m.
