Postgame Interview with Coach McGaha

MONTICELLO, Ark. – Arkansas-Monticello scored multiple runs in four of their six at-bats, including seven runs in the second inning, and defeated Harding 19-5 in a run-rule shortened game at Weevil Field. It was the first game of a best-of-three series in the Great American Conference Tournament. The second game of the series begins Saturday at noon. The third game would follow if necessary.

Arkansas-Monticello, ranked 27th in Division II and the No. 2 seed in the tournament, improved to 32-14, defeating Harding for the first time in four games this season at Weevil Field. Harding (24-27), the No. 7 seed, won the three previous meetings in GAC play during the regular season.

GAC Player of the Year Corey Wood went 3-for-4 with four runs and seven RBIs to lead the Weevil attack. He hit three-run home runs in both the first and the fifth innings, his 19th and 20th home runs of the season. Each of UAM's top three hitters scored four runs, catcher Travis Steinke doubled three times, and second baseman Nick Piraino went 4-for-5.

Zac Stewart and Zach Beasley led the Harding's offense. Both were 3-for-3. Stewart scored a run and Beasley drove in two with a bases loaded single in the first. Harding added two more runs in the fourth on Alan Copeland's second home run of the season.

Harding starter Andrew Fiddler (5-7) could not escape the second inning and suffered the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) in 1 1/3 innings. Jackson Ward, Grayson Ponder and Matt Sherry all pitched in relief for the Bisons.

UAM reliever Ben Aldridge (4-2) pitched 1 2/3 innings and got the win. Weevil starter Zach McKnight allowed five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live in Searcy on KVHU 95.3-FM and through a live audio link on HardingSports.com.
