Harding Men's Soccer Posts Fifth Straight Shutout; Defeats Delta State 1-0

SEARCY – The Harding men's soccer team waited out a 1 hour, 52 minute lightning delay Thursday and then made history.

Harding (5-1-0) defeated Delta State 1-0 at Stevens Field for its school-record fifth straight victory, all shutouts. No Bison opponent has scored since an overtime goal by Dallas Baptist in Harding's first game of the season. Since then, Harding has outscored its opponents 10-0.

After a scoreless first half, junior Matheus Ribeiro raced down the left side of the field and took a pass from an onrushing Jason Diaz and drilled a low shot inside the far post to give Harding the victory.

It was Ribiero's second goal of the season and first game-winner.

Delta State (2-2-0), a member of the Gulf South Conference, entered the game with the fourth highest-scoring offense in NCAA Division II, scoring 4.33 goals per game, but Harding limited the Statesmen to only eight shots and just three on goal.

Sophomore Michael Wasson made three saves in goal for the Bisons and recorded his fourth shutout in his fifth start.

Harding's five shutouts in six games ties the program's single-season record. The Bisons also had five shutouts in 2002 and 2008.

Harding's next action is Sunday against Hendrix in Conway, Arkansas.
