Harding Defense Keys Victory at Henderson State

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Junior Tim Wagner scored 31 points and Harding's defense limited Henderson State to 33 percent shooting in a 69-55 victory over the Reddies on Saturday in Great American Conference men's action at the Duke Wells Center.

Harding overcame a season-high 24 turnovers by shooting 48 percent from the field and holding Henderson State to only two 3-pointers, one in each half.

Harding improved to 10-5 overall and 7-4 in GAC games and remained in third place in the conference standings. It was Harding's sixth consecutive victory over Henderson State.

The Reddies fell to 11-6 overall and 6-5 in conference, losing their fourth straight game after a six-game winning streak. It was only Henderson State's second home loss of the season.

Henderson State led 30-28 at halftime. Harding made 3-pointers on its first six field goals but had 14 turnovers and gave up 13 offensive rebounds.

Henderson State shot only 33 percent but took advantage of the turnovers and a 22-11 rebound advantage to shoot 16 more times than Harding.

Wagner led Harding with 10 points in the first half. Ben Marello scored eight of his team-leading 15 points in the first half.

After 16 lead changes, freshman Adam Horn flipped in a shot in the middle of the lane with 9:53 left to give Harding a 43-42 lead that it would never relinquish. It started a 10-2 run over the next six minutes that Wagner finished with a long 3-pointer from the right wing that put the Bisons ahead 53-44 with 3:41 left.

Harding made 15-of-15 free throws in the second half to help maintain its lead.

Wagner was 8-of-12 from the field, 4-of-6 from 3-point range and 11-of-12 at the free-throw line. Will Francis added 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

Saturday's game was the first of three straight on the road for Harding. The Bisons will leave for Oklahoma on Wednesday and meet Southwestern Oklahoma in Weatherford on Thursday and Northwestern Oklahoma in Alva on Saturday.
