Harding Women's Basketball Falls 78-69 to Hawaii Pacific in Oahu Classic

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Harding women's basketball fell behind Hawaii Pacific early, battled back in each quarter but never regained the lead and fell 78-69 to Hawaii Pacific Saturday at St. Francis High School Gym in the Oahu Classic.

Harding (4-7) plays its second game in the Classic on Sunday at 1 p.m. Central against Montana State-Billings. Hawaii Pacific (7-2), a member of the Division II Pacific West Conference, won for the seventh time in its last eight games.

Harding took a quick early lead, but with the game tied at 7-7, Hawaii Pacific went on a 10-3 run over the next seven minutes to take a 17-10 lead. The Sharks led the rest of the first half.
Hawaii Pacific led 18-13 after the first quarter. The Sharks shot 39 percent with Harding at 33 percent.

A Peyton Padgett 3-pointer to open the second quarter pulled Harding within two at 18-16. With 2:00 left in the quarter, Syndie Jones made a layup to cut Hawaii Pacific's lead to 30-27, but the Sharks went on a 6-0 run to close the quarter and led 36-27 at halftime, its largest lead of the half.

Turnovers were costly for Harding in the first half. Harding committed 13 miscues and was outscored 10-0 off turnovers.

Harding cut the Hawaii Pacific lead to 42-39 in the third quarter with a 6-0 run that Kellie Lampo capped with a layup at 4:35. The Sharks answered with an 8-2 run and led 52-46 after three.

Harding within three points twice with under six minutes left. The second time came on a Sydnie Jones layup with 4:37 left to cut the lead to 62-59. Hawaii Pacific answered with a 3-pointer and a layup from Samantha Lambrigtsen, and the Sharks led by at least six the rest of the way.

Jones and Caroline Hogue led Harding with 13 points each, and Kennedy Cooper scored 12.

Lambrigtsen led Hawaii Pacific with 17 points.

Hawaii Pacific outrebounded Harding 41-34 and had 14 offensive rebounds to Harding's seven.

Senior Sydney Layrock scored four points and moved past former teammate A'ndi Haney into 10th place in career scoring at Harding with 1,270 points.
