Harding Women's Basketball Runs Past MSU-Billings in Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Senior Sydney Layrock scored a season-high 26 points, junior Caroline Hogue added 20, and Harding had its best first quarter of the season in an 87-72 victory over Montana State-Billings Sunday in the Oahu Classic at St. Francis High School Gym.

Harding (5-7) opened the game on a 16-3 run and had another 15-0 run in the first quarter that included two Layrock 3-pointers, a Hogue 3-pointer and a Hogue three-point play. The Lady Bisons shot 58 percent, made 6 of 7 3-pointers and led 33-11 after the first quarter, its highest-scoring quarter of the season.

MSU-Billings (9-2) rallied to outscore Harding 20-11 in the second quarter, but the Lady Bisons held a 44-31 lead at halftime.

The Yellowjackets were a perfect 7 of 7 from the free-throw line in the third quarter and cut Harding's lead to 64-55 after three.

MSU-Billings scored the first four points of the fourth quarter and trailed by only five, but Harding went on an 11-0 run to pull away for the victory. Layrock started the run with a 3-pointer from the top of the key and added a free throw. Freshman Amanda Kearney, who had 11 points, added a pair of free throws, and Sydnie Jones and Peyton Padgett added layups to complete the run.

Harding shot 44 percent in the game, but shot 10 of 16 from 3-point range (62.5 percent), tied for the second-best 3-point percentage ever by the Lady Bisons.

Layrock was 9 of 11 from the field and made all four 3-point attempts. Hogue was 5 of 11 shooting and made 9 of 11 free throws. Kearney and Kennedy Cooper both had two 3-pointers.
Lexi Prevost and Rylee Kane led MSU-Billings with 14 points each.

MSU-Billings, who lost for the second straight time in Hawaii, shot only 33 percent was outrebounded 53-31.

Harding's next action is back on the mainland. The Lady Bisons travel to Bethany, Oklahoma, to take on Southern Nazarene in Great American Conference action.
