Harding Women's Basketball Fourth-Quarter Rally Falls Short

SEARCY – The Harding women's basketball trimmed a 17-point deficit to four with just over four minutes left, but No. 7 Drury held off Harding and won 65-57 Tuesday in nonconference play at Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

Drury won its sixth straight and improved to 8-1. Harding fell to 3-6.

A 3-pointer by Daejah Bernard at the end of the third quarter gave Drury a 56-39 lead. Harding opened the fourth quarter with a 14-1 run that was started with a pair of Sydnie Jones layups and ended with 3-pointers from Sydney Layrock and Kellie Lampo.

Harding had two chances to cut the lead below four points, but Drury's Alice Heinzler made her team's first field goal of the fourth quarter on a layup with 1:37 left. Drury led by at least five the rest of the way.

Jones was Harding's scoring leader with 10 points. Layrock added nine points, and Caroline Hogue had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Drury led for all but 33 seconds of the first half. The Panthers led by 10 four different times in the half, including 34-24 at the break.

Heather Harman scored 19 of Drury's 34 points in the first half and led Drury with 23 points in the game. Heinzler had 20 points. The two combined to make eight of Drury's 10 3-pointers. Harding shot just 3 of 14 from 3-point range.

Harding had 18 turnovers in the first half that led to 19 Drury points and committed 29 turnovers in the game. Drury outscored Harding 26-10 off turnovers, while Harding outscored Drury 32-20 in the paint.

The game was the first of four straight nonconference games. The stretch continues Saturday when Harding hosts Christian Brothers.
