Baseball Bisons Upset No. 7 St. Edward's, Split Doubleheader

AUSTIN, Texas – Junior Zac Beasley had three hits, including his first career home run, and freshman Austin Allen allowed only one earned run in five innings to lead Harding to a 6-3 victory over No. 7-ranked St. Edward's in game one at Lucian-Hamilton Stadium. St. Edward's won game two 10-3.

The teams will conclude the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.

Harding's victory was its first road win over a top-10 ranked team in program history. Harding is 1-4 on the season. St. Edward's is 2-3.

Harding took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With one out, Chris Taylor reached when the throw from St. Edward's shortstop Blake Alexander was dropped by first baseman Zach Schindler. Beasley doubled Taylor to third, and Taylor scored on Tyler Mohr's infield single.

Beasley struck again in the fifth, launching a home run to right, scoring Taylor, who singled with two outs.

St. Edward's pulled within 3-1 on a pinch-hit home run by Derek Thompson in the bottom of the fifth. It was the only run allowed by Allen in his second collegiate start. Allen (1-1) has allowed only two earned runs in 9 2/3 innings in his first two starts.

Harding tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Myles Humphreys walked with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. J. Paul Fullerton struck out swinging on a pitch in the dirt, but St. Edward's catcher Gable Whitaker threw wildly to first, allowing Humphreys to score and Fullerton to reach safely.

Fullerton moved to third on Connor Kelly's single to right center and gave the Bisons a 5-1 lead when he scored on Jesse Cox's safety squeeze bunt.

St. Edward's answered with two in the sixth on an RBI double from Schindler and a run-scoring ground out by Romeo Corina.

Harding loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs and added an insurance run on Humphreys' sacrifice fly to right.

It was Beasley's third career three-hit game. He hit again in the seventh inning needing a triple for the cycle but walked on a 3-2 count. Taylor and Mohr both had two hits, and Taylor scored a career-high three runs.

Mason Faulkner pitched the seventh for Harding and earned his first save.

St. Edward's starter Brandon Boone (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (two earned) in 5 1/3 innings.

In game two, St. Edward's scored five in the third inning and led throughout.

Harding scored its first run in the fifth. Kelly singled to lead off the inning, went to third on Brooks Pitaniello's single and scored on a wild pitch. Fullerton doubled in two more runs in the ninth.
St. Edward's had 12 hits, including a two-run home run by Whitaker in the third.

Reed Roberts (0-2) started for Harding and took the loss. He allowed six earned runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings. Nash Thomas (1 1/3 IP, 2 ER), Matt Brashear (1 IP, 1 ER), Connor McVay (1 IP) and Raiff Beever (1IP) worked out of the bullpen for Harding.

Tanner Lawson (1-0) struck out 12 in eight innings and collected the win.
