Harding Baseball Drops Series Opener at Oklahoma Baptist

SHAWNEE, Okla. – Luke Van Dover and J. Paul Fullerton each had two hits for Harding but the Bisons could not overcome a five-run first inning from Oklahoma Baptist and fell 10-0 on Friday in the opener of a three-game Great American Conference series.

The teams conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

With the loss, Harding dropped to 7-15 overall and 6-7 in the GAC. Oklahoma Baptist is now 13-9 overall and 7-6 in conference.

After a scoreless first inning for Harding, Oklahoma Baptist scored five runs on five hits with all five runs coming with two outs off Harding starter Austin Allen.

Allen (3-3) lasted four innings and gave up 12 hits and eight earned runs before giving way to Matt Sherry. He allowed a run in three relief innings, and Matt Brashear got two outs in the eighth before Oklahoma Baptist scored the 10th run to end the game early.

Jinny Parra, the GAC Pitcher of the Year in 2016, improved to 4-2 and blanked the Bisons over seven innings. He gave up seven hits and no walks and struck out seven. Blake Whitehead pitched a scoreless eighth.

Oklahoma Baptist had 14 hits, including three from Brett Berghammer. Catcher Juan Gonzalez hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth.

It was the fifth multi-hit game of the season for both Van Dover and Fullerton.
