Harding Baseball Swept in GAC Doubleheader at Southeastern Oklahoma

DURANT, Okla. – Harding managed only nine hits Friday and was swept 9-1 and 5-4 in a Great American Conference doubleheader at the Ballpark in Durant. The teams will conclude the series with a single game Saturday at noon.

With the two losses, Harding fell to 11-20 overall and 8-12 in GAC games. Southeastern moved to 8-19-1 overall and 7-11 in conference.

Harding never got its bats going in game one and committed a season-high five errors. The victory gave Southeastern head coach Mike Metheny 1,315 career wins, the most ever by an NCAA Division II baseball coach.

Southeastern had four hits, including a two-run single by Jett Swigart, to score three runs in the first inning. The Storm added an unearned run in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead.

Neither team scored again until the sixth, when Harding plated its only run on a Chris Taylor sacrifice fly that brought home J. Paul Fullerton, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.

Southeastern had consecutive run-scoring singles with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to knock Harding starter Austin Allen (4-4) out of the game.

The Storm tacked on a three-run home run by Brett Akins, his first of the season, in the eighth inning.

Grant Guest had a pair of singles in Harding's five-hit effort. It was his team-leading seventh multi-hit game.

Southeastern starter Scott Richards (1-3) earned his first win of the season. He allowed two hits and one earned run in five innings. Michael Brinska received his first save, pitching four scoreless innings and allowing three hits and striking out two.

Allen took the loss, yielding 10 hits and six runs (five earned). He did not walk any and struck out five. Nash Thomas (2.0 IP, 3 ER) and Connor McVay (0.1 IP) pitched in relief for Harding.

Harding took an early 3-0 lead in game two, but the lead did not last long.

Luke Van Dover had an RBI double, his second of the season and the only extra-base hit of the day for the Bisons, to score Guest in the first inning. With runners at the corners and one out in the second, Ben Brauss laid down a bunt hit that scored Connor Kelly from third. Guest then scored Fullerton with a sacrifice fly.

Southeastern scored single runs in the third and fourth inning off Harding starter Reed Roberts to cut the lead to 3-2, then plated three runs on four hits in the fifth to take the lead for good.

Trailing 5-3, Harding's first two hitters – Taylor and Zach Beasley – walked to start the sixth. Hayden Walraven reach on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Taylor scored from third on a double play to cut the lead to one, but a ground out ended the inning.

Guest reached on a two-out single in the top of the seventh but was stranded. It was the fourth Harding hit and the first since the second inning.

Roberts (1-5) took the loss, allowing eight hits and five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Southeastern reliever Bailey Burks (1-0) earned his first win of the season with three scoreless innings of relief.
