Harding Baseball Takes GAC Series Opener Over Arkansas-Monticello

SEARCY – Arkansas-Monticello pitchers walked eight hitters, hit two more and threw two wild pitches, and Harding took full advantage in a 9-4 victory over the Weevils on Sunday in Great American Conference action at Jerry Moore Field.

The victory gave Harding (18-24, 12-16) a magic number of one for qualifying for the GAC Tournament. The Bisons need one more conference win or one more conference loss from East Central to reach the tournament.

Arkansas-Monticello (25-15, 20-8) lost its seventh straight GAC regular season game to Harding and dropped to third place in the conference standings.
The teams conclude the three-game series with a Monday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

With the score tied 1-1, Harding scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth on only two hits. A walk, a single and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs. Chris Taylor walked on four pitches against Arkansas-Monticello starter Grant Black (5-5) to score Ben Brauss and give Harding the lead. The second hit of the inning was a two-run single from Zach Beasley, and Taylor scored the fourth run on a wild pitch.

The Weevils cut Harding's lead to 5-4 in the top of the fifth on a three-run home run from Sean Wagner, his third of the season. Wagner was 3-for-4 with a run and four RBIs.

Harding answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Luke Van Dover walked to lead off the inning and came around to score on a wild pitch. Myles Humphreys walked and scored on a misplayed fly ball into right field off the bat of J. Paul Fullerton.

Black exited after the second run scored. He allowed seven runs (six earned) on four hits and walked six.

Grant Guest drove in Harding's final two runs with a bases-loaded single to center in the eighth. Guest had two of Harding's seven hits.

Austin Allen (6-4) earned the win for Harding, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over five innings. He struck out five. Mason Faulkner pitched the final four innings for his sixth save. He gave up only two hits and no walks and struck out two.
