Baseball Bisons Split with UAM, Earn GAC Tournament Berth

SEARCY – Harding baseball split its Great American Conference doubleheader with Arkansas-Monticello on Monday and in the process qualified for the GAC Tournament. Harding used its highest-scoring game of the season to officially qualify, winning 14-7 in game one.

Arkansas-Monticello (26-16, 21-9) won game two 3-2, defeating Harding (19-25, 13-17) for the first time in its last nine GAC regular season games against the Bisons.

By winning the series two games to one, Harding moved into sixth place among tournament-eligible teams. The Bisons have one remaining regular-season series next weekend against second-place Arkansas Tech.

Harding had a season-best 19 hits and scored nine runs in the second inning of game one.

Trailing 3-0 at the time, Harding sent 13 hitters to the plate and had 10 hits in the inning. Luke Van Dover added a three-run home run in the third to push Harding ahead 12-3. Harding had 13 of its 19 hits in the first three innings.

Harding was 14-of-25 with runners on base and 11-of-16 with runners in scoring position in the game.

Every hitter in Harding's lineup had at least one hit. Grant Guest was 4-for-5 with two runs, and RBI and a double. Myles Humphreys was 4-for-5 with three runs scored.

Reed Roberts (2-6) was the winning pitcher. He went 5 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits and six earned runs. Logan McCall earned his second save, pitching 3 2/3 scoreless innings.

Arkansas-Monticello starter Braden Chambers (6-3) did not survive the second inning. He allowed nine runs on nine hits and only retired four hitters.

Harding did not have a hit in its first 10 at-bats with runners on base in game two, but with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Tyler Mohr singled to score Brooks Pitaniello. An error on the play by leftfielder Austin Brakebill allowed Hayden Walraven to score. The two runs cut Arkansas-Monticello's lead to 3-2, but a fly out ended the game.

Jackson Ward (2-6) pitched well for Harding in game two but took the loss. He allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings.

Kris Brown (5-3) was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run in six innings.
