Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | by Scott Goode (9/26/17)

William Jewell Defeats Harding Men's Soccer, 2-0

LIBERTY, Mo. – Harding men's soccer season has been pretty successful when the Bisons have been at home. The road has been a different matter.

Despite having more than three times as many shots as its opponent, Harding fell 2-0 to William Jewell on the road Tuesday. The Bisons have won three of their four home games but are winless in five games with two ties on the road.

The result snapped Harding's three-game winning streak and brought an end to the three-game skid of William Jewell, a member of the NCAA II Great Lakes Valley Conference.

William Jewell (2-5-0) took the lead early. Drew Dempsey, a forward from Liberty, scored his team-leading fourth goal in the 6th minute with Jordan Trinidad assisting. It was only the third time in nine games that Harding (3-4-2) allowed the first goal.

Neither goalkeeper was very busy in the first half. Harding managed six shots but none were on goal. William Jewell shot only twice and scored on its only shot on goal.

William Jewell put the game away on its first shot of the second half. Junior midfielder Teddy Gifford scored his third goal of the season from five yards out in the 59th minute.

Late in the game, Harding had a chance to pull a goal back, but William Jewell goalkeeper Nick Cooper saved Andre Cunha's penalty kick in the 84th minute. The save sealed the shutout, only the third time the Bisons have been held scoreless this season.

Facts and Figures
Harding held William Jewell to only four shots, a season low by a Bison opponent this season and the fewest since Hendrix managed only four last season in a 2-0 Harding win.

Harding fired 13 shots and has outshot its opponent seven times in nine games, including the last four straight.

Harding defeated William Jewell 2-0 last season in Searcy in the only other meeting between the two teams.

Freshman Aric McKinney replaced Harding starting goalkeeper Michael Wasson in the 74th minute, seeing his first action as a Bison.

Up Next
Harding will return to Great American Conference play Tuesday, Oct. 3 against Ouachita Baptist. The Bisons are on top of the conference standings at 2-0-0. Ouachita Baptist is 1-1-0 in conference.
