Smothering Defense Leads Harding to Victory over Southeastern Oklahoma

SEARCY – Harding women's basketball posted its third straight outstanding defensive effort and defeated Southeastern Oklahoma 63-46 Saturday in Great American Conference action at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

The win was the third straight for the Lady Bisons (9-12, 5-8), and Harding has not allowed its opponents to score more than 53 points during the streak. Southeastern (8-10, 6-7) shot only 30.2 percent, had 22 turnovers and lost for the sixth time in its last seven games.

During Harding's three-game winning streak, Harding has limited its opponents to an average of 47.0 points and to 30.0 percent shooting from the field. The Lady Bisons have now defeated the Savage Storm in seven of the last eight meetings in Searcy.

Harding led 9-8 after one quarter, but used a 21-2 second-quarter run to take a 29-13 lead with 1:14 left in the period. During the run, Harding made 8 of 10 shots, including three from Carissa Caples, who scored 12 points in the game. Southeastern closed the half with seven straight points including a 3-pointer by Brady at the buzzer and Harding led 29-20 at the break.

A Sydnie Jones layup at the third quarter buzzer off a dish from Caples combined with 11 of 14 shooting from the foul line helped Harding outscored Southeastern 19-13 in the period and push its lead to 48-33. Harding led by as many as 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Harding freshman Kellie Lampo made 12 of 14 free throws and led Harding in scoring with 18 points. She also led the team with seven rebounds.

Reserve guard Tracy Johnson led Southeastern with 10 points.

Harding returns to the road for its last regular-season Oklahoma road trip. The Lady play at Southwestern Oklahoma on Thursday and at Northwestern Oklahoma on Saturday.
