Harding Earns 3-2 GAC Victory over Southern Nazarene

SEARCY – It took Braeden Grundy 72 seconds to score in the first half. That's fast. It took Grundy only eight seconds to score in the second half. That's really fast.

Grundy's two goals and his assist on Christian Ramos' goal led Harding to a 3-2 victory over Southern Nazarene in Great American Conference men's soccer action Thursday at Stevens Field.

Harding improved to 7-4-1 overall and 2-2-0 in GAC games. Southern Nazarene lost its fifth straight on the road and fell to 4-9-0 overall and 2-2-0 in conference. Harding and Southern Nazarene are tied for second in the GAC, one game back of leader Ouachita Baptist.

Grundy took a looping pass from Jason Diaz and scored his third goal of the season at the 1:12 mark of the first half.

Southern Nazarene answered with just 25 seconds left in the first half. Marcel Joseph tapped in a loose ball in front of the Harding goal after a failed clearance landed at his feet. It was his fourth goal of the season.

Harding's Julio Martins kicked off the second half with a pass to Andre Cunha, who sent a through ball to Grundy racing down the right side of the 18-yard box. His shot inside the far post stopped the clock only eight seconds into the half. It was his fourth goal of the season and marked his first career two-goal game.

In the 53rd minute, Grundy again got free down the right side. He slid a pass across the box to Ramos, who scored his third goal of the season. It was his second game-winning goal this year and fifth of his career.

Southern Nazarene's Pedro Garcia cut the Harding lead to one goal with his first goal of the season in the 59th minute, but Harding held on over the game's final 30 minutes.

Harding plays its third of four straight home games Saturday against GAC opponent Oklahoma Baptist.

Facts and Figures

  • Grundy's first goal was the sixth-fastest goal in program history.
  • Harding limited Southern Nazarene to only seven shots.
  • Diaz's assist on the first goal was the 16th of his career. He is only two off the school record of 18 set by Mitch Jones from 2000-03.
