Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | by Scott Goode (11/9/18)

Central Missouri Defeats Harding 85-62 in Season Opener

WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Harding men's basketball got off to a slow shooting start, and Central Missouri shot well throughout in an 85-62 victory over the Bisons Friday at the GAC/MIAA Challenge at the UCM Multipurpose Building. It was the season opener for both teams.

Trailing 45-19 at halftime, Harding shot 59 percent in the second half and outscored Central Missouri 43-40 after the break.

Two newcomers – Gabriel Divic and JV Long – led Harding with 10 points each. Long also led the team with five rebounds and six assists. Freshman Jordan Long added nine points.

Gavin Pinkley was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field and led Central Missouri with 14 points.

Harding missed its first nine shots until Long hit a 3-pointer at 11:48 that cut the Central Missouri lead to 18-6.

The Bisons shot only 3-of-25 (12 percent) in the first half. Central Missouri was 16-of-28 (57 percent). Harding's other two field goals of the first half were a Divic 3-pointer and a Roman Martin layup.

The majority of Harding's first-half point came at the free-throw line where the Bisons were 11-of-18 (61 percent).

Harding shot 17-of-29 in the second half and pulled to within 16 points on a Long three-point play with 3:23 left after trailing by as many 30 early in the second half.

After making just 2-of-9 3-pointers in the first half, Harding shot 6-of-12 from long range in the second half. Divic and Alex Francis made two 3-pointers each.

Central Missouri, selected fourth in the MIAA preseason poll, shot 56 percent overall and made 9-of-23 (39 percent) from 3-point range.

Friday's game was just the second meeting between Harding and Central Missouri. The first came in the 2013 NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament in Mankato, Minnesota. Harding won that meeting 75-71.

Harding's next action is Saturday against another MIAA foe, Pittsburg State. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in Warrensburg, Missouri.
