Third-Quarter Burst Leads Harding to Victory over Arkansas-Monticello

SEARCY – Third-quarter runs have proven pivotal in Harding's games against Arkansas-Monticello this season. The Lady Bisons defeated the Blossoms 73-56 Thursday in Great American Conference play at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House after an 18-2 run in the third quarter broke open a close game.

In Harding's 70-53 victory over Arkansas-Monticello on Jan. 20 in Monticello, a similar 17-2 run helped the Lady Bisons pull away.

With the win, Harding improved to 15-14 overall and 11-10 in the GAC. The Lady Bisons are currently fourth and cannot finish lower than fifth, so Harding will play its GAC Tournament quarterfinal game Friday, March 2 at 5:45 p.m.

Arkansas-Monticello dropped to 7-19 overall and 3-18 in the GAC. The Weevils have lost nine straight overall and have been eliminated from the GAC Tournament.

Harding has now won 13 straight games between the teams and nine straight in Searcy.

Harding trailed 30-28 at halftime, but the Lady Bisons took control of the game in the third quarter. Harding shot 53 percent (7 of 13) and made 12 of 15 (80 percent) free throws. Defensively, Harding held Arkansas-Monticello to 3-of-11 shooting and forced nine turnovers. Harding outscored UAM 14-6 in the paint and 13-3 off turnovers in the quarter.

Harding led 54-39 after three quarters.

Senior Sydney Layrock led the Lady Bisons in scoring with 19 points, becoming only the sixth Harding player to score 1,500 career points. Kellie Lampo had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Amanda Kearney added 11.

Harding outrebounded Arkansas-Monticello 52-32 and had a season-high 23 offensive rebounds.

Brittnee Broadway led the Blossoms with 14 points.

Harding's final regular season game is Saturday at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House. The Lady Bisons host Henderson State for Senior Night with the game beginning at 5:30 p.m. Seniors Falan Miller, Mackenzie McNamara, and Layrock will be honored in a postgame ceremony.
