Harding Baseball Draws 11 Walks But Falls 7-3 to No. 23 Arkansas-Monticello

MONTICELLO, Ark. – No. 23 Arkansas-Monticello limited Harding to five hits Friday and defeated the Bisons 7-3 in Great American Conference action at Weevil Field.

Harding dropped to 23-21 overall and 13-15 in the GAC. Conference leader Arkansas-Monticello improved to 29-12 overall and 22-6 in conference play.

Two of Harding's hits, both doubles, came in the first inning. Nolan Fertig doubled with one out, and scored on Zach Beasley's double, his team-leading 13th of the season.

Arkansas-Monticello answered with five straight runs, scoring two in the first, two in the third and one in the fourth off Harding starter Jackson Ward (6-2). Ward lost for the first time since February 20, allowing five runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.

Harding scored a run without a hit in the sixth. Luke Van Dover, Beasley, Connor Kelly and Chris Taylor all walked, Taylor with the bases loaded to drive in Van Dover. Kelly's walk extended his on-base streak to 20 consecutive games.

Harding drew a season-high 11 walks, two more of them coming in the ninth when Miles Humphreys and Grant Guest walked to open the inning. Van Dover hit a sacrifice fly to score Humphreys with Harding's final run.

Nolan Fertig had two of Harding's five hits, his 16th multi-hit game of the season. Harding was 2-for-16 in the game with runners on and 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Arkansas-Monticello had six hits with runners on base.

UAM starter Braden Chambers (6-0) remained undefeated in earning the win. He allowed two earned runs on four hits and six walks with two strikeouts.

Andres Rios went 3-for-4 with a run, three doubles and four RBIs. Drake Rowton was 3-for-4 with two doubles.
Harding and Arkansas-Monticello conclude the series with doubleheader Saturday at noon.
