Fertig Leads Harding Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep of No. 23 Arkansas-Monticello

MONTICELLO, Ark. – Harding's slim chances for a Great American Conference Tournament berth held on by a thread Saturday as the Bisons swept 23rd-ranked Arkansas-Monticello in a doubleheader. Harding won the opener 17-12 and won game two 5-4.

Much of the credit goes to junior Nolan Fertig, who was 7-for-11 with three runs and five RBIs in the doubleheader.

Harding improved to 25-21 overall and 15-15 in the GAC. The Bisons are in seventh place and are 2.5 games behind sixth place Southwestern Oklahoma. The two teams both have three conference games remaining. Harding needs a sweep of Arkansas Tech next weekend, and needs Southwestern to be swept at home by Northwestern Oklahoma.

In game one, Arkansas-Monticello scored in every inning except the fifth but still lost by five runs. The reason was Harding's 10-run, nine-hit sixth inning. The Bisons had seven singles and two doubles in the inning and sent 14 batters to the plate. The first 10 of those batters reached base safely. Chris Taylor and Zach Beasley both had two-run doubles in the inning.

The 10-run inning, Harding's first of the season, helped erase a 6-1 deficit. The Harding offense was not finished after the sixth. It scored two runs in each the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

Harding's 19 hits were a season high. Fertig was 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs. It was his first career four-hit game and the fourth this season by a Harding player. Van Dover was 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs and his third home run of the season. Kelly and Jackson Thomas also had three hits and scored twice each.

Harding went 13-for-26 with runners on base, including 12-for-19 with runners in scoring position.

Harding reliever Reed Roberts (3-3) earned the win, pitching 4 1/3 innings out of the pen and striking out three.

Arkansas-Monticello had 17 hits and walked eight walks but left 13 runners despite having 11 hits with runners on base.

Harding trailed 3-2 entering the sixth inning of game two, but Fertig drove in two runs with a single to give the Bisons a 4-3 lead. Arkansas-Monticello answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie it again.

Fertig again came up big in the seventh, driving in the winning run with two outs, scoring Miles Humphreys from second base on a single up the middle.

Reliever Matt Sherry (1-0) got the last out of the sixth to earn his first win of the season. Logan McCall came on to record his first save. He struck out two in the bottom of the seventh.

Fertig was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Taylor drove in Harding's other two runs.

Harding plays again Tuesday in a nonconference game against Union at Jerry Moore Field in Searcy. The Bisons conclude the regular season next weekend at home against Arkansas Tech.
