Harding Men's Soccer Remains Unbeaten with 2-0 Shutout at Southwest Baptist

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Harding men's soccer scored a goal in both halves, had an overwhelming shot advantage and posted its second shutout of the season with a 2-0 nonconference victory Thursday over Southwest Baptist.

With the win, Harding improved to 4-0-1, its best-ever start after five games. Southwest Baptist, a member of the MIAA, dropped to 0-5-0. The Bearcats were shutout for the third time this season.

Senior Jason Diaz put Harding ahead 1-0 with a goal in the 27th minute, scoring for the second straight game and recording his first game-winning goal this season. Sophomore Bryant Young had his first career assist on the goal.

Sophomore Brandon Patterson scored his first collegiate goal in the 62nd minute to seal the victory for Harding.

The Bisons outshot the Bearcats 24-2 overall and 10-1 on goal. Senior goalkeeper Michael Wasson made one save to record his second shutout of the season.

Harding plays the second of four straight road games Sunday at 1 p.m. at Lindenwood (MO), another MIAA opponent.

Facts and Figtures
  • Harding has at least one goal in each of its first five games for only the third time in program history – 2001 and 2014 were the other two seasons. Harding had never scored a goal in each of the first six games of a season.
  • Harding won its first two road games of the season for only the second time in program history. The other was in 2003 when Harding won road games against Belhaven (3-0) and Freed-Hardeman (5-2).
  • Harding now leads the series with Southwest Baptist 9-1-1.
  • Diaz's goal was the 12th of his career, one goal outside of Harding's top 10. He now has three career game-winning goals.
  • Patterson became the sixth different Harding player to score this season.
  • Wasson's shutout was the 14th of his career, extending his own school record.
  • In three games against Southwest Baptist, Wasson has made three saves and has three shutouts.
