Free Throws Key to Harding's 13th Straight Home Victory

SEARCY – Harding sophomore Kennedy Cooper scored a season-high 21 points and had a career-high 14 rebounds to lead the Lady Bisons to a 66-53 Great American Conference victory over Southern Nazarene Saturday at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

The formula for Harding to remain perfect at 6-0 at home this season was a little different than most of its previous wins. The Lady Bisons were outscored in the paint for only the third time this season but made seven 3-pointers and tied a season high with 25 free throws made. It was the first time in 11 games that Harding shot better than 70 percent from the free-throw line and won despite shooting a season-low 27 percent (17 of 62).

Harding improved to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in the GAC, extending its home winning streak to 13 games with Arkansas Tech coming to Searcy Thursday.

Southern Nazarene outscored Harding 26-20 in the paint but had a three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 5-9 overall and 4-4 in conference. The Crimson Storm has not won in seven tries in Searcy.

Cooper shot 6-of-14 from the field and made both 3-point attempts. She was also 7 of 10 at the free-throw line. Carissa Caples added 14 points, and Kellie Lampo had 12.

Adrienne Berry led Southern Nazarene with 12 points but shot only 4 of 11 from the field. Abby Niehaus had 11 points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Harding led 34-24 at halftime. Southern Nazarene made only two of its first 16 shots, and Harding went on a 14-0 run during the drought to stretch its lead to 24-8 with 6:07 left.

Harding had its own cold stretch, missing 12 straight shots in the first quarter, but made five 3-pointers and went 11-of-14 from the free-throw line to maintain a lead throughout the first half.

Harding shot only 21 percent (4 of 19) in the third quarter. Southern Nazarene outscored Harding 17-12 in the period and trailed 46-41 entering the fourth.

Harding made 11 free throws in the fourth and never allowed Southern Nazarene closer than eight points.
