Harding Women Fall to Washburn in Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE – Washburn scored 10 straight points in 90 seconds late in the second quarter to pull away from Harding and defeat the Lady Bisons 74-69 Thursday at the Cruzin' Classic.

Harding (5-5) closed to within two points with less than a minute left in the game but had the potential game-tying 3-pointer rim out with less than 10 seconds remaining.

Harding, who lost both games in Florida, will look to get back on track on Jan. 2 when it returns to Searcy to host East Central in Great American Conference play.

Harding tied the game for the fourth time on a layup by Jacie Evans that knotted the score at 25-25 with 1:57 left in the second quarter. Washburn (6-4) scored the next 10 points, getting 3-pointers from Alexis McAfee and Reagan Phelan and a pair of layups from Sabela Reigosa and Phelan to give the Ichabods a 35-25 halftime lead.

Harding made just 4 of 17 shots (24%) in the second quarter and was outscored 24-11.

Both teams scored 24 points in the third quarter, and Washburn led 59-49 entering the fourth quarter.

Harding trailed 71-64 with 1:46 left, but a 3-pointer from Jordan Elder and a layup from Evans pulled the Lady Bisons to within 71-69 with 31 seconds remaining.

Harding fouled Phelan who made one of two free throws. A 3-point attempt from Cheyenne Brown just missed, and Phelan made two free throws after being fouled.

Kennedy Cooper led Harding in scoring with 13 points, and Elder made four 3-pointers to score 12. Brown made 7 of 8 free throws and added 11 points.

Evans scored nine points and led Harding with a season-high 11 rebounds. Kellie Lampo scored nine points, her first game this season with fewer than 11 points.

McAfee led Washburn with 22 points.

Harding's shooting struggles continued in Thursday's game. The Lady Bisons shot 38% from the field, its fifth straight game below 40%.
