Harding Baseball Gets On, Gets In to Win GAC Opener 5-3

SEARCY – Harding's leadoff hitter reached six times and scored five times Saturday in a 5-3 victory over Arkansas-Monticello in the first game of a three-game Great American Conference series at Jerry Moore Field.

The victory was the fifth straight for Harding, who improved to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the GAC. Arkansas-Monticello lost its second straight game and fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference.

The teams conclude the series with a doubleheader Sunday at 1 p.m.

Down 2-0, Harding scored single runs in four straight innings beginning with the bottom of the second. Miles Humphreys walked to lead off the second and scored on a dropped fly ball by UAM right fielder Grant Shepherd.

Nolan Fertig led off the third with his third triple of the season and scored on Ben Bailey's line drive to left to tie the game at 2-2. Harding took a 3-2 lead in the fourth. Brendan Perrett doubled to left to lead off the inning and scored on what appeared to be a double by Connor Kelly. Kelly was called out for missing first base, but Perrett's run counted.

UAM tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single from Nathaniel English, but Harding again answered win the bottom of the inning. Jack Thomas led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and to third on a ground out before scoring the game-winning run on an error by UAM second baseman Audy Clary.

Harding tacked on an insurance run in the eighth. Perrett led off with a single and scored on Luke Van Dover's GAC-leading sixth double of the season.

Harding starter Austin Allen (2-1) gave up a two-run home run to John Mauldin, the second batter he faced, but retired the next 10 hitters he faced. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in 5.0 innings before giving way to Ryder Yakel.

Yakel retired the first eight batters he faced and struck out five over 4.0 innings for his second save. He has not allowed an earned run in 12.0 innings this season.

UAM starter Peyton Sullivan (0-1) took the loss. He yielded four runs (three earned) over 4.0 innings. Reliever Ojani Chacon struck out five over 4.0 innings and gave up one run.

Fertig, who extended his hitting streak to five games, went 2-for-5 with a run. Perrett had two hits and scored twice.
