Harding Baseball Holds One Lead, Loses Another in Doubleheader Split at Southern Arkansas

Magnolia, Ark. – Harding held one early lead and surrendered another in a doubleheader split Monday in Great American Conference action against 13th-ranked Southern Arkansas. The Bisons won the opener 5-1 after scoring two to take the lead in the third. A grand slam gave Harding an early lead in game two, but Southern Arkansas came back to win 6-5.

Harding is now 10-5 overall and 4-2 and part of a four-way tie for third place in the GAC. The Bisons play a nonconference doubleheader Tuesday against University of the Ozarks beginning at 4 p.m.

Southern Arkansas is 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the GAC. The Muleriders sit tied with Arkansas Tech atop the conference standings after two GAC series.

Game 1
Harding took a 2-0 lead on Luke Whitaker's two-run single in the third. Luke Van Dover led off the sixth and scored on a Southern Arkansas error to give the Bisons a 3-0 lead.

Harding senior Tanner Smith (3-1) won his third straight start, allowing only three hits, no walks and one earned run over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out five.

Smith faced the minimum through three innings and did not give up a hit until Brett McGee doubled with two outs in the fourth. Smith's only run allowed came on Cooper King's solo home run with two outs in the seventh.

Ryder Yakel came on to earn his third save, pitching the final 2 1/3 innings without allowing a hit and striking out two. He has pitched 14 1/3 innings without allowing a run and has yielded only five hits with 14 strikeouts against one walk.

Harding tacked on two in the eighth with runs scoring on a Miles Humphreys RBI single and another on a Ben Brauss sacrifice fly.

Whitaker went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, his first multi-hit game.

Game 2
A first-inning grand slam from Humphreys put Harding ahead 4-0 in the second game, but Southern Arkansas scored one in the first, two in the second and took the lead for good with three in the bottom of the fifth in the seven-inning game.

The grand slam was the first since Brendan Perrett hit one against Ouachita Baptist last season.

Humphreys added singles in the fifth and seventh innings for his first three-hit game of the season. His hit in the seventh loaded the bases with one out as Harding attempted to tie the game. A fielder's choice force out at home and a strike out ended Harding's hopes.

Starter Logan McCall (1-1) took the loss for Harding, allowing six runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings. Kaden Kirby recorded four outs in relief.

Southern Arkansas starter Tanner Vaught (2-0) gave up five runs in five innings but got the win. Matt Kortendick got the last three outs for his third save.

Fertig and Van Dover had two hits each for the Bisons.
