Harding Posts 10 Extra-Base Hits and 21 Strikeouts in Sweep of Truman

SEARCY – Harding batters collected 23 hits, including 10 for extra bases, and Bison pitchers struck out 21 in a doubleheader sweep of Truman State Friday at Jerry Moore Field. Harding won 8-2 and 7-1 and conclude the four-game series Saturday with another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

With the wins, Harding improved to 2-3 on the season, and Truman dropped to 0-2. Harding has won all six games in the series between the teams.

Game 1
Harding junior Austin Allen struck out a career-high nine batters, Luke Van Dover had three hits, and Jack Thomas homered to lead the Bisons in the opener.

Allen (1-1) went 5.0 innings and gave up two second-inning runs before shutting down the Bulldogs over his last three frames.

Harding answered Truman's two-run second with two of its own in the inning. Ben Brauss had an RBI on the first of his two doubles, and Cody Smith drove in a run with a bunt single.

Harding took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring two unearned runs, including one on an RBI double by Van Dover. The Bisons tacked on a single run in the sixth on a Smith run-scoring ground out, and added three more in the eighth. The first run of the inning came on Thomas's one-out home run to left, Harding's first four-bagger of the season. Brenden Perrett and Nolan Fertig also plated runners in the inning.

Junior Ryder Yakel relieved Allen in the sixth and pitched four scoreless innings to earn his first save. He has not allowed a run over 8.0 innings in his first two outings.

Truman starter Rian Markes (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs (two earned) over 5.0 innings. Steven Bradbury went 3-for-4 with a run for the Bulldogs.

Game 2
Senior Tanner Smith (1-1) struck out eight and allowed only a third-inning double to earn the win for Harding in game two. After two starts, Smith's ERA is 1.06.

The Bisons scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings and held the Bulldogs scoreless until Evan Kayser's solo home run in the seventh.

Harding had 11 hits, including five for extra bases. Van Dover doubled twice, and Fertig became just the third Harding player ever with two triples in a game, joining Ben Rodriguez (vs. Central Baptist, 2008) and Jake Kirby (at Arkansas Tech, 2003).

Van Dover, Fertig and Ben Bailey each had two hits for Harding.
