Harding Baseball Drops Series Opener at Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas Tech hit three home runs and held off a late Harding rally to defeat the Bisons 8-5 Friday in the first game of a three-game Great American Conference series at Carl Baswell Field.

With the loss, Harding dropped to 29-19 overall and 17-14 in conference. Entering the final day of the regular season Saturday, Harding is in sixth place in the GAC standings. There are five teams battling for the final three GAC Tournament spots. The top six teams reach the conference tournament.

Tech moved into a second-place tie with Southern Arkansas at 20-10 in conference games. The Wonder Boys are 28-19 overall.

Harding trailed 5-0 after six innings. Tech scored an unearned run in the first and added a three-run home run from Britt Stroth in the second and a solo shot from Jonathan Arrieta in the fourth.

Harding's comeback began in the seventh with the Bisons opening their scoring with a two-run double from Miles Humphreys, his ninth double of the season, to cut the lead to 5-2.

Tech answered with its third home run of the game, a solo homer from Patrick Miner in the bottom of the seventh, and a sacrifice fly from Michael Post in the eighth to extend the Tech lead to 8-2.

Harding made one last push in the ninth, scoring on a two-run single from David Butterfield. Luke Van Dover scored on a wild pitch to trim Tech's lead to three runs. Harding loaded the bases with two outs but did not score again.

Tanner Smith (5-6) took the loss for the Bisons, allowing six earned runs in seven innings. Tech starter Isaac Hale (8-2) pitched six innings and gave up two earned runs for the win.

Nolan Fertig, Humphreys and Jack Thomas each had two hits for Harding.
