Harding Baseball Sweeps Tech in Doubleheader to Earn GAC Tournament Berth

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Turns out that Harding needed to win both games of a doubleheader Saturday at Arkansas Tech to reach the Great American Conference Tournament. The Bisons did just that, winning a 22-8 blowout and a 4-2 pitchers' duel.

Harding finished the regular season with a 31-19 record, tied for the most wins by any team in the GAC. The Bisons have a 19-14 conference record and will be the No. 6 seed in the tournament. Harding will play regular season champion Arkansas-Monticello Saturday, May 4 at noon.

Arkansas Tech concluded its regular season with a 28-21 overall record and 20-12 GAC mark to finish third in the conference standings.

Game 1
Harding had three players with four hits each and set season highs in runs (22), hits (22), walks (9), and total bases (38). Brendan Perrett was 4-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, two home runs and six RBIs. Perrett's 12 total bases rank third in Harding single-game history and were the most since Adam Darby had 13 at Christian Brothers in 2007.

Connor Kelly had four singles, and Miles Humphreys had two doubles and two singles.

It was only the third time Harding scored 22 or more runs in a GAC game. The other two were 25 at Southern Nazarene in 2014 and 23 at Arkansas-Monticello in 2010.

Harding scored in every inning but the third and had multiple runs in five of the eight innings it hit. The Bisons scored 18 runs in its final four at-bats.

Logan McCall started and went 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits. Ryder Yakel (6-2) entered in the fifth and worked 2 2/3 innings. He gave up two runs but earned the win.

Arkansas Tech used seven pitchers and every one gave up at least one run. The starter, Kohl Drake (1-2), gave up six runs in four innings.

Game 2
The win in game one made this one the most important game of the season. With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Tech's Patrick Miner opened the inning with a single against Harding starter Ty Hoecker. Brian Tims (3-0) came on in relief but before he could pitch to Korey Thompson, the teams had a sit out a 45-minute rain delay.

After the delay, Tims was nearly unhittable. The Wonder Boys only had one hitter reach base in Tims's four innings of work. Miner singled with two outs in the sixth. Tims retired each of the other 12 batters faced.

Harding took the lead for good in the fifth on a one-out solo home run by Humphreys, his fifth of the season. Jack Thomas hit his third sacrifice fly of the doubleheader to tack on an insurance run in the sixth.

Tech's Hayes Cox (6-5) look the loss, allowing nine hits and four runs (two earned) over 5 2/3 innings.
Ben Brauss had three of Harding's nine hits.
