Delta State Scores Two Second Half Goals to Defeat Harding Men's Soccer

SEARCY – Delta State scored two second half goals to come from behind and defeat Harding men's soccer 2-1 Sunday in nonconference play on a swelteringly hot day at the Stevens Soccer Field.

Harding suffered its first defeat of the season and fell to 1-1-1. Delta State, a member of the Gulf South Conference located in Cleveland, Mississippi, improved to 2-1-0.

With the score tied 1-1, Delta State's Owen Howard took a short pass from Josue Villalta at the top of the 6-yard box and scored inside the far post for the eventual game-winner. It was his first goal of the season.

Delta State tied the game in the 63rd minute on another shot near the goal mouth. Zachary Breaux scored his first of the season on a short feed from Odin Johansson.

Harding took the lead in the 35th minute. Delta State defender Matthew Edwards fouled Harding's Riley Mayes in the box, and senior Christian Ramos scored on the ensuing penalty kick. It was Ramos's second goal this season, both on penalty kicks.

Ramos now has 19 career goals, tying him with Jeff Ireland, brother of Harding head coach Jon Ireland, for third in program history.

The teams combined for only six shots on goal, three for each team.

Harding goes on the road for its next two games, opening Great American Conference play Thursday against Oklahoma Baptist in Shawnee, Oklahoma. Harding takes on Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Oklahoma, Saturday.
