Harding Men's Soccer Speed Keys 2-1 Victory over Newman

SEARCY – Harding's speedy reserve forward Jeremy Nwonumah set up two goals with his pace down the right flank and led the Bisons to a 2-1 Great American Conference victory over Newman Thursday at Stevens Soccer Field. It was the first meeting between the teams in men's soccer.

The victory moved Harding to 4-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in conference. It is the second time in the last three seasons that the Bisons have started with three straight conference wins. In 2017, Harding won its first five GAC games.

The win, coupled with a 2-2 tie by Fort Hays State at Ouachita Baptist, left Harding as the only team in the conference with a perfect GAC record.

Newman, located in Wichita, Kansas, lost its second straight and fell to 2-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference.

In the first half, Newman outshot Harding 15-7 and forced several difficult saves by Bison goalkeeper Carlos Calderon. The senior from Spain had five stops, including two in one-on-one situations, and Harding cleared one shot off the goal line.

Just over four minutes into the second half, Newman took the lead. A Harding foul to the left of the 18-yard box set up junior forward Ignacio Lerech for a free kick. Lerech's effort curled off the far post and in for his first goal of the season.

The lead lasted less than a minute.

At the 49:57 mark, Nwonumah raced down the right side. His cross from the far right slid just in front of Riley Mayes at the end of the six-yard box and over to freshman midfielder Joe Ruedi who banged home his second goal of the season.

In the 61st minute, Nwonumah took a long feed down the right side from freshman defender Adrian Renteria and streaked toward the goal. At the top of the 18-yard box he slid a pass to the middle, and senior Matheus Ribeiro scored the game-winner inside the far post. It was Ribeiro's first goal of the season, ninth of his career and third career game-winner.

Nwonumah had two assists in a game for the first time in his career.

Calderon had a season-high nine saves.

Harding will go for its fourth straight win Saturday at 1 p.m. against 22nd-ranked Fort Hays St.
