Caples Scores 32 to Lead Harding Past Southern Arkansas

SEARCY – Junior Carissa Caples tied her career high with 32 points, and Harding continued its strong play at home this season with a 79-59 victory in Great American Conference action over Southern Arkansas at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

Harding won for the seventh time in eight home games and earned its 19th win in the last 22 meetings with Southern Arkansas to improve to 9-7 overall and 6-4 in the GAC. The Lady Bisons moved into a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings.

Southern Arkansas lost for the 15th time in its last 16 trips to Searcy and fell to 11-5 overall and 5-5 in conference.

Harding made seven 3-pointers in the first half and led 33-26 at the break. Caples made four 3-pointers and scored 16 of Harding's 18 points in the first quarter. Harding got three more 3s in the second quarter from Jordan Elder, Abbie Jiles and Peyton Padgett. Harding limited Southern Arkansas to only 30% shooting in the first half and outrebounded the Muleriders 24-18.

Harding outscored Southern Arkansas 21-12 in the third including a 16-2 stretch over the final six minutes of the period. The Lady Bisons shot 45% in the fourth quarter and extended their lead to as many as 27 points.

Caples was 12 of 18 from the field, including 6 of 9 from 3-point range. Coming off a season-high 28 points in Harding's win Thursday over Arkansas Tech, Cheyenne Brown scored 17 and had eight rebounds. Padgett also had eight rebounds and dished out a career-high 11 assists, the second time in her last three games with 10 or more.

Harding made 11 3-pointers, shooting 46% from long range.

In the first meeting between the teams, a 76-71 Southern Arkansas win in Magnolia, Harding committed 47 turnovers. Saturday, Harding forced more turnovers (23) than it committed (19) and outscored Southern Arkansas 24-13 off turnovers.

Diamond Morris was the only Mulerider in double figures, leading her team with 12 points.

Saturday's game was the first of three straight at home for Harding. The Lady Bisons host Northwestern Oklahoma Thursday.
