Harding Turnover Trouble Leads to Loss to Southwestern Oklahoma

SEARCY – Southwestern Oklahoma scored the first 10 points of the game and the first 16 points of the second half and defeated Harding 95-73 Saturday in a Great American Conference men's basketball game at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

Southwestern snapped a two-game losing skid and improved to 9-9 overall and 5-7 in the GAC. Harding fell to 7-11 overall and 2-10 in conference.

Southwestern entered the game in the top 10 in Division II with more than 19 turnovers forced per game. The Bulldogs forced 24 Saturday and outscored the Bisons 33-7 off turnovers.

Harding led briefly in the first half but a 14-3 Southwestern run gave the Bulldogs their first of three 10-point first-half leads. Southwestern led 53-43 at the break.

The Bisons missed their first five shots of the second half and had seven turnovers before Joel Polius scored on a layup with 13:16 left. At that point, Harding trailed 69-45. Southwestern extended its lead to as many as 28 with 12:37 remaining in the game.

Harding made seven straight shots and pulled within 16 with 4:42 left but got no closer. The Bisons shot 51% from the field and made 12 of 28 3-pointers. Southwestern shot 53% and outscored Harding 52-26 in the paint.

Romio Harvey and Tyler Hutchieson each had 17 points to lead Harding. Hutchieson's total was a career-high. Davis Morgan made four 3-pointers and scored 12 points, and Polius added 10.

Damion Thornton led four Bulldogs in double figures with 28 points, one off his career high. Marquis Johnson scored 18 points and Bralyn James had 17.
