CLINTON, Miss. – Harding baseball opened the 2020 season with a pair losses Saturday against Mississippi College, a member of the Gulf South Conference. The Bisons fell 6-1 in the opener and 6-2 in game two.
The two teams conclude the series Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
In the opener, Harding had runners on in every inning except the ninth and left 16 on base. Senior Miles Humphreys was 3-for-4 and drove in Harding's run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to score Cody Smith, who had two hits, including a double. It was the eighth time in Humphreys's career he had three or more hits in a game.
Junior Andrew Bradshaw, a transfer from Crowder College, earned the start and took the loss despite allowing only one earned run over four innings. He struck out five and yielded only three hits.
Mississippi College had 11 hits and got five scoreless innings from starter David Dunn (1-0).
Harding had only five hits in game two, and its runs again came in the sixth inning on a two-run home run by Luke Van Dover, his 18th career homer.
Mississippi College scored one in the second but took control of the game with a five-run fifth that included a three-run home run from Caleb Reese and a solo homer by Chauncey Callier.
Ty Hoecker (0-1) took the loss, allowing five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings with six strikeouts.
