Harding Shoots Past Tech to Claim GAC Lead

SEARCY – Harding had three players score 22 points or more and tied its highest scoring output in the 74-game series with Arkansas Tech, defeating the Golden Suns 87-69 Thursday at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

It was Harding's ninth straight win, and combined with a loss by Southeastern Oklahoma, left the Lady Bisons in sole possession of first place in the Great American Conference. Harding won its third straight over Tech and its fifth straight home game to improve to 16-7 overall and 13-4 in conference.

Tech had its four-game road winning streak snapped and fell to 14-7 overall and 11-6 in conference. The Golden Suns dropped into a three-way tie for fourth in the GAC standings.

The key stretch of the game came early in the second quarter. Harding led 24-20 after one period, but Tech made the first shot of the second quarter to pull within two. Tech had three chances to take the lead but missed its next three shots, and Harding responded with a 20-2 run and led 44-24 with 2:27 left in the half. At one point in the quarter Tech missed 11 straight shots, and Harding held a 49-31 advantage at the break.

Tech got as close as 11 points in the third quarter, but Harding came out in the fourth and nailed four of its first five 3-point attempts, three coming from Jordan Elder, and pulled away.

Cheyenne Brown led Harding with 24 points after scoring a season-high 28 points in Harding's overtime victory at Tech earlier in the season. Elder scored a career-high 23, hitting seven 3-pointers, the most by a Harding player in the Rhodes-Reaves Field House since Makala McNair made eight against St. Edward's in 2008.

Carissa Caples made four of Harding's season-high tying 14 3-pointers and scored 22. It was her third game with 20 or more points this season.

Harding held Arkansas Tech to only 39% shooting and just 5 of 22 from 3-point range.

The Lady Bisons shot 52% from the floor, its second-best effort of the season, and shot a season-high 58% from 3-point range.

Harding travels to Arkadelphia, Arkansas, Saturday to take on a Henderson State team who is tied for fourth and 9-1 at home this season.
