ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Harding made a season-high 17 3-pointers but a rash of second half turnovers allowed Henderson State to climb back into the game and defeat the Bisons 88-79 Saturday in Great American Conference action at the Duke Wells Center.
Henderson State won for the 11th time in 12 home games this season and moved to 17-7 overall and 12-6 in conference. Harding fell to 8-16 overall and 3-15 in conference.
Harding made 10 3-pointers in the first half and led 51-37 with 16:28 left in the game. A 7-0 Henderson State run closed Harding's lead to five at 54-49 with 13:26 left, and a 12-0 Reddie run gave them the lead. Rel Johnson's corner 3-pointer with 6:02 left put Henderson State ahead for good. The Reddies shot 58%, outscored Harding 15-3 at the free throw line and scored 57 points in the second half.
Harding had 15 turnovers in the second half, and Henderson State outscored the Bisons 19-2 off turnovers.
Henderson State entered Saturday's game with Harding as the fifth-best team in NCAA Division II in defending against 3-pointers. Harding's 17 3s tied for third-most in a single game.
The Bisons were 10 of 18 from long range in the first half and only 3 of 9 inside the arc. Henderson State shot just 22% (8 of 37), missing its last 11 attempts. Harding closed the half on a 14-0 that included four 3-pointers. Henderson State did not have a field goal after Jeremiah Toney's layup with 4:31 left in the half.
Romio Harvey made 6 of 7 3-pointers and led Harding with 20 points and seven assist. Jordan West made three 3-pointers and scored 19, and Davis Morgan hit five from long range and scored 17.
Raekwon Rogers scored 21 of his career-high 27 points in the second half to lead Henderson State. He was 11 of 11 from the free-throw line. He was one of five Reddies in double figures.
Harding returns to action Thursday at home against Southern Nazarene.
