Hoecker, Witzke Lead Harding to Split at No. 24 Arkansas-Monticello

MONTICELLO, Ark. – After Arkansas-Monticello won the first game of a Great American Conference doubleheader Sunday against Harding, the Bisons needed a solid starting pitching performance from lefty senior Ty Hoecker.

Hoecker (1-1), coming back after missing a start with a concussion, shut down the 24th-ranked Weevils for 5 1/3 innings in a 5-0 victory in the seven-inning game. Arkansas-Monticello won the opener 5-1 and won Saturday's game 12-4. It was the first GAC series of the season for both teams.

Harding is 5-4 overall and 1-2 in conference and plays a nonconference game against Christian Brothers Tuesday in Searcy. Arkansas-Monticello is 4-6 overall and 2-1 in the GAC.

A native of Galveston, Texas, Hoecker struck out five and did not allow a runner to reach second base until Cade Thompson doubled to lead off the sixth inning. After a fly ball sent Thompson to third and Hoecker walked Jordan Johnson, senior reliever Ryder Yakel came on and induced a double play to get Harding out of the inning.

Yakel retired the side in order in the seventh to preserve Harding's second shutout of the season.

Harding scored two runs in both the second and third innings. Chris Witzke had an RBI double in the second and scored on Zak Whitis's sacrifice fly in the second. Witzke, who had two hits in both games of the doubleheader, drove in Harding's second run in the third.

Cody Smith drove in Harding's fifth run in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Michael Chrisman, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.

Weevil starter Mason Philley (0-1) lasted only two innings and took the loss, allowing four earned runs.

Harding managed just six singles in the first game of the doubleheader. Arkansas-Monticello scored in four straight innings, beginning with a two-run third to take the lead for good.

Harding starter Logan McCall (2-1) took the loss. He allowed four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. Brent Southerland gave up only one hit in recording the last seven outs.

Livan Cordova (2-1) gave up only one run on a Witzke RBI single in the fourth and earned the win. He struck out three in seven innings.
