Harding Defense Shackles Southern Nazarene

SEARCY – Harding held Southern Nazarene to 29% shooting and forced 20 turnovers in a 52-43 victory Thursday in Great American Conference action at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House. It was Harding's best defensive effort this season and the fewest points Harding allowed in a GAC game since a 75-41 win over Ouachita Baptist on Feb. 15, 2018.

Cheyenne Brown led Harding with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Carissa Caples added 15 points. Peyton Padgett had five points and a team-high 14 rebounds.

With the win, Harding remained tied with Southeastern Oklahoma for first place in the GAC standings. The Lady Bisons are 17-8 overall and 14-5 in the GAC. It was Harding's eighth straight home win over Southern Nazarene, who fell to 15-8 overall and 12-7 in conference.

Harding led 42-32 entering the fourth quarter. Southern Nazarene cut into the lead early in the period, but a 3-pointer from Jordan Elder returned Harding's lead to 10 at 47-37 with 5:07 left. Harding missed its next seven shots down the stretch, but Caples made five free throws down the stretch to hold off Southern Nazarene, who shot just 4 of 13 in the period.

Caples made two of Harding's three 3-pointers and Padgett scored five to lead Harding to an 18-11 lead after one quarter. Southern Nazarene struggled from the field, shooting only 29% and missing five of its six 3-point attempts.
Neither team shot well in the second quarter. Harding made 3 of 13 and Southern Nazarene made 4 of 11, but the Lady Bisons held the Crimson Storm scoreless for the last three minutes of the quarter and took a 26-20 lead into halftime. Cheyenne Brown had five of Harding's eight points in the second quarter.

Harding scored the first eight points of the third quarter to take a 34-20 lead and weathered a 7-0 Southern Nazarene run. The Crimson Storm pulled within five twice in the quarter, but Harding scored the period's last five points and held a 42-32 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Alexus Jones led Southern Nazarene with 13 points. Sonia Sarda had 11.

Harding plays its final home game of the season Saturday against Oklahoma Baptist, who lost 78-63 to Arkansas Tech Thursday in Russellville. Harding will honor senior Brown, Padgett and Taylor Sims in a postgame ceremony.
