Harding Stuns Previously Unbeaten SAU in Series Opener

SEARCY – Harding baseball remained unbeaten at home with a 6-3 Great American Conference victory over Southern Arkansas, a team ranked as high as No. 2 in one national poll, Friday at Jerry Moore Field.
Harding, now 5-0 at home, and previously unbeaten Southern Arkansas conclude the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

Harding (7-4, 2-2) scored two runs in each the first and third innings off Southern Arkansas starter Hunter Brantley (2-1), who struggled with his control and walked seven over 2 2/3 innings.

Michael Chrisman had an RBI single in the first, and Luke Van Dover walked and scored from third on David Butterfield's squeeze bunt. Harding left the bases loaded in the second, but Owen Martin's two-out, bases loaded single in the third gave the Bisons a 4-0 lead.

Miles Humphreys singled to open the fourth, and one out later Chrisman singled him to second. A pair of wild pitches moved the runners around to second and third, and Humphreys scored on the third wild pitch of the inning. Chrisman scored on a two-out Butterfield single to left center to give Harding a 6-0 advantage.

Josh Walker hit a two-run home run for Southern Arkansas (11-1, 3-1) in the fifth, but that was the only blemish on the day for Harding starter Andrew Bradshaw (2-2), who went 5 1/3 innings in earning the win. Carter McCall came on in relief to get Harding through the sixth and seventh before Ryder Yakel retired the last six Southern Arkansas hitters in order to record his third save.

Humphreys extended his on-base streak to 34 games, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Chrisman also had two hits, and Butterfield and Martin drove in two runs each.

Riley Orr was the only Southern Arkansas batter with two hits.
