Smith's Game-Winner Sends Harding Baseball to Split with Southern Arkansas

SEARCY – Harding sophomore Cody Smith lined a single to centerfield to score Luke Van Dover from second in the bottom of the 11th inning and give the Bisons a doubleheader split and Great American Conference series victory over Southern Arkansas Saturday at Jerry Moore Field.

Harding (8-5, 3-3) won game two 3-2 after Southern Arkansas (12-2, 4-2) won the opener 8-2. Harding won Friday's opener 6-3.

With the score tied 2-2, Van Dover singled up the middle to lead off the inning and moved to second on Connor Kelly's sacrifice bunt. Southern Arkansas reliever Tanner Vaught (2-1) walked David Butterfield intentionally before Smith lined a 2-1 pitch up the middle. Van Dover sped around third, and the throw from Southern Arkansas centerfielder Ty Manning was up the first-base line, allowing Van Dover slid in safely with the game-winning run.

Butterfield drove in both of Harding's first two runs, one with a sacrifice bunt in the fourth and on an infield ground out in the sixth.

Ty Hoecker started for Harding and went 6.0 innings, allowing two runs. Ryder Yakel blanked Southern Arkansas for the next four innings, and Brent Southerland (1-0) pitched a scoreless 11th to earn his first win as a Bison.

Vaught pitched 5.0 innings in relief of Southern Arkansas starter Parker Abrego and struck out six in the loss.

Van Dover had four of Harding's seven hits in the game, including a triple in the fourth. It was the first four-hit game of the season by a Harding player and the first of Van Dover's career.

Southern Arkansas's Brett McGee homered in both games Saturday, including a solo home run in the second inning of game two.

Two Harding errors led to three unearned runs in the first inning of game one. McGee's solo homer accounted for the fourth run.

Logan McCall (2-2) took the loss despite allowing only one earned run over 5.0 innings.

Zach Smith (4-0) gave up only one earned run in 8.0 innings for Southern Arkansas.

Chris Witzke drove in Butterfield in both the seventh and ninth innings to account for Harding's runs.

Harding is back in action Tuesday for a home doubleheader against NAIA foe Williams Baptist.
