Harding Falls in Overtime to Arkansas-Monticello

SEARCY – Arkansas-Monticello made two key 3-pointers and seven free throws in overtime to defeat Harding 82-76 Thursday in Great American Conference action at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.

Arkansas-Monticello won for only the second time in its last seven road games to move its record to 15-9 overall and 7-8 in the GAC. Harding dropped to 7-14 overall and 2-13 in conference.

KJ Lesure made a 3-pointer to open the scoring in overtime, and Arkansas-Monticello led throughout the five-minute extra period. The Weevil lead was still three points when Marcus Gilbert made the second 3-pointer for UAM to push their advantage to 76-70. Harding got no closer than five points the rest of the way.

Harding trailed 50-48 with 12:02 left in the second half, but forced Arkansas-Monticello into a 2-for-21 cold shooting stretch that included 12 straight missed shots. During that time, Harding scored 12 straight points and held a 60-50 lead with 6:28 left.

Arkansas-Monticello outscored Harding 15-5 the rest of the half, and a jumper from Austin Hardy with 1:42 remaining tied the game at 65. Neither team scored for the rest of regulation.

Arkansas-Monticello led 38-33 at halftime. The Weevils shot 45% in the first half and got 15 points from Hardy. Romio Harvey scored 14 in the first half for Harding, who shot 38% and made seven 3-pointers.

Harvey finished with a team-high 20 points for Harding. Jordan West, celebrating his 20th birthday Thursday, scored 17 points, and Emir Ahmedic added 10.

Hardy led Arkansas-Monticello with 24 points. Lesure had 19 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, and Gilbert scored 15.

Harding plays again Saturday against Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia.
