Clutch Hitting, Strong Starting Pitching Key Harding Doubleheader Sweep

SEARCY, Ark. – Harding baseball received two outstanding starting pitching efforts Saturday and swept Southwest Baptist 4-0 and 5-1 in a nonconference doubleheader at Jerry Moore Field. Due to impending weather, Sunday's third game has been moved up an hour to a noon first pitch.

Harding improved to 3-2 with the wins, and Southwest Baptist, a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, fell to 3-2.

Making only his second start for Harding, junior transfer Andrew Bradshaw (1-1) pitched a complete game shutout. He needed only 98 pitches, allowed just three hits and one walk, and struck out four.

Connor Kelly, who reached base all four times in game one, singled in Brendan Perrett from second with two outs in the third inning to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead.

Southwest Baptist threatened in the top of the sixth with runners at the corners and two out, but Bradshaw got a ground ball to get out of the inning.

Michael Chrisman launched a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to secure the victory for Harding.

Defensively, Harding third baseman David Butterfield threw out 10 Southwest Baptist batters at first base, setting a school record for assists by a third baseman in a single game.

Southwest Baptist starter Kyle Smith (1-1) took the loss, allowing four earned runs in 6.0 innings.

Game two saw Logan McCall (2-0) go the distance, allowing only two hits, one unearned run and a career-high 10 strikeouts.

After Southwest Baptist took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the second inning, Harding answered with two unearned runs of its own on two Bearcat errors in the third.

Harding tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Cody Smith led off the inning with a triple and scored on Butterfield's infield single. Luke Van Dover walked with the bases loaded to drive in a run, and Owen Martin scored on a wild pitch.

Van Dover had two RBIs, Martin scored twice and Butterfield had two hits.

Southwest Baptist used six pitchers in game two with starter Drew Wagner (1-1) taking the loss despite not allowing an earned run in 3.0 innings.
